Description

Salome, Elephant Hill's Icon Chardonnay, is crafted in a stunningly concentrated, highly textural, dazzlingly elegant style. The fruit is largely from their Te Awanga coastal vineyard with a small portion off their Triangle vineyard in Bridge Pa. It's as good as anything we've encountered out of the Hawkes Bay, and sits alongside the greatest single vineyard Chardonnays from Kumeu River. The focus is on intensity, texture and richness of fruit with contrasting mineral, saline elegance. 12 months in French oak with full lees stirring, only 20% of the wine going through MLF, keeping the natural acidity bright and energetic. Drink now or hold through until 2029.

Smells

Concentrated tropical, peach and nectarine fruits, deep complexity revealing subtle toasty oak, butterscotch and roasted nuts. It keeps giving in the glass.

Tastes

Very rich and weighty in the mouth, with pristine acidity providing incredible length and structure, mineral/saline notes combine nicely with a hint of biscuity lees and toasty French Oak. Immaculately balanced, concentrated and highly complex, this is meditational, sensorial Chardonnay that rates with the finest French Burgundies. Savour with texturally rich foods (lightly spiced OK) and save a glass to contemplate at meals end by itself. Best 2019 - 2029.
