Description

Planted in 1999 with spacing of 1.5m x 1m (6,600 vines/ha), approaching the planting densities of top Burgundy from where Larry drew his inspiration for Kupe. Now 20-years old. the vines are producing fruit with fabulous depth, varietal character and balance, Kupe has morphed into a unique expression of terroir. The growing season was warm and dry, yielding concentrated, denser flavours and pure fruit with lovely ripeness and soft, but essential tannin structure derived from hand plunging of the ferment. Larry has the oak maturation perfect (50% new French barriques - 50% seasoned) with the concentrated fruit perfectly subsuming the oak. It was bottled without fining and filtration, enhancing mouthfeel, character and finesse. A stunning Kupe, superbly showcasing the strong Martinborough vintage and it will be at is best through 2025-2033, but can be enjoyed earlier after 2 hours in a decanter.

Smells

Dense aromas of black and red fruits with a seductive dried herb infusion, baking spices, complex savoury notes and haunting florals.

Tastes

Immediately strong and concentrated with a delicious attack of sweet black and red fruits. Mixed spices, fine chocolate, anise and savoury oak add deep complexity to the mid palate, conjoined with classic savoury and herb seduction strengthening in the juicy, powerful prolonged finish. Impressive tannin and acid structure that will support its evolution through 2025-2033, needs to be served alongside an equally special dish.
